Oyo Government Unveils Plans to Expand Power Supply Across the State
The Oyo State Government has announced new initiatives to transform the electricity sector, leveraging recent legal reforms and strategic investments to boost power supply and support economic growth.
The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Energy and Chairman of the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Prof. Daud Shangodoyin, during a press briefing at the Governor’s Office, Agodi, Ibadan.
Prof. Shangodoyin described the Electricity Act as a major turning point, empowering states to generate, transmit, distribute, and regulate electricity independently. He noted that Governor Seyi Makinde had proactively established the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission in 2024 to manage the state’s electricity market.
The commissioner revealed that the state has opened its electricity market to private sector participation, with nearly 30 investors already expressing interest. However, he noted that current power generation in Oyo stands at 182 megawatts—far below the minimum 520 megawatts needed to sustain growth.
Prof. Shangodoyin outlined key projects under the Independent Power Project (IPP), prioritizing critical infrastructure such as government offices, courts, schools, and the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State. He dismissed claims that state-led power projects had failed, highlighting that the 11-megawatt IPP was completed and partially operational during testing, supplying around 5 megawatts to key facilities.
He assured that ongoing reforms and investments would significantly improve electricity access and reliability within the next three quarters.
The briefing was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, as well as the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
