Over 30 Students Hospitalised as Gas Leak Recurs in Ogun Schools
More than 30 students have been hospitalised following a fresh gas leak at several schools in Ogun State, the fourth reported incident since April 2026. The latest incident affected Anglican Girls Grammar School in Obalende, Ijebu-Ode, and Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, among others. An unusual odour was also reported in Ago-Iwoye, forcing some schools to send students home. The affected students were taken to hospitals in Ijebu-Ode and Ijebu-Igbo with symptoms including shortness of breath, stomach disorders and drowsiness.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said some students required oxygen, while most had been discharged and a few remained under observation. He said investigations were ongoing to determine the source of the emissions, with a team from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission joining the assessment. Previous incidents in the Ijebu axis were attributed to natural underground gas emissions, with the government ruling out sabotage and pipeline leaks as possible causes. The latest incident is not the first of its kind in the state, as similar emissions have been reported repeatedly since April.
