Onome Didih Wins Nigeria’s Second Weightlifting Gold at Glasgow 2026

July 27, 2026

Nigeria’s Onome Didih has won the country’s second gold medal in weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after a record-breaking performance in the women’s 53kg category.

Didih dominated the event, setting three Commonwealth Games records. She lifted 93kg in the snatch, followed by a 113kg clean and jerk, while her combined total of 206kg also set a new Games record.

India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav claimed the silver medal with a total lift of 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx finished with bronze after recording 178kg.

The victory adds to Nigeria’s impressive outing in Glasgow, following Edidiong Joseph Umoafia’s gold medal success in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event earlier on Monday.

With Didih’s triumph, Team Nigeria’s medal tally has risen to nine, comprising five gold and four silver medals as the competition continues.
