Olubadan Calls for Constitutional Roles for Traditional Rulers
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has renewed calls for clearly defined constitutional roles for traditional rulers in Nigeria, saying such recognition would strengthen governance and improve collaboration between monarchs and elected authorities.
Oba Ladoja made the call on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Lagos House, Marina.
According to the monarch, the absence of constitutionally recognised responsibilities for traditional institutions represents a longstanding gap in Nigeria’s governance framework. He said formalising their roles would enhance governance outcomes and foster more structured engagement between traditional rulers and government at all levels.
The Olubadan also commended the Lagos State Government for what he described as significant progress in infrastructure development and urban management, noting that sustained investments had improved traffic flow and transportation across the state.
He specifically praised the blue and red rail lines, as well as the expanding water transportation system, saying the initiatives had helped reduce travel time and ease congestion in many parts of the metropolis.
Oba Ladoja thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu and the people of Lagos State for their support during his coronation last year, noting that the state holds deep personal and traditional significance for him.
He clarified that there was no disagreement between the traditional institution and the Oyo State Government, but maintained that constitutional backing would further strengthen mutual respect and cooperation.
In his response, Governor Sanwo-Olu described Ibadan as a rallying point of the Yoruba race and commended Oba Ladoja for his leadership in promoting peace and unity in Oyo State and beyond.
The governor thanked the monarch for the visit and expressed confidence that his reign would bring development and transformation to Ibadanland and the country at large.
