NYSC Debunks Rumours of ₦70,000 Minimum Wage for Corps Members
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially refuted claims circulating in the media regarding the implementation of a ₦70,000 minimum wage for corps members.
In a statement released on Monday, Eddy Megwa, the Director of Information and Public Relations for the Corps, urged corps members, their families, and the public to disregard these false reports.
Megwa clarified that the NYSC has not received any directive from the relevant government authorities to increase the allowances of corps members to ₦70,000.
He emphasized that the NYSC has established communication channels and procedures that members are familiar with, advising them to rely on these official sources for accurate information.
“Corps members are well aware of the approved mode of communication within the scheme, and we urge them to ignore any misleading information that does not come through these channels,” the statement read.
The NYSC also warned against the activities of mischief-makers attempting to exploit the situation by spreading falsehoods to deceive Nigerians.
The statement comes amid widespread discussions following the signing of a new minimum wage bill by President Bola Tinubu in late July 2024, which raised the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.
The bill, signed into law after extensive negotiations between the government and labor unions, was a response to rising inflation and the increased cost of living in Nigeria.
In 2020, the NYSC increased the monthly allowances for corps members from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000 following the enactment of a new minimum wage bill at the time. However, the NYSC has made it clear that no further adjustment has been authorized since then.
President Tinubu’s recent signing of the minimum wage bill into law has been described as a fulfillment of his campaign promise to improve the living conditions of Nigerian workers.
The new law mandates a ₦70,000 minimum wage, which will be reviewed every three years, reflecting the government’s commitment to responding to economic challenges.
Despite these developments, the NYSC has stressed that any changes to corps members’ allowances would be communicated directly through official channels, ensuring transparency and clarity.
The public is advised to remain cautious and verify any information from reliable sources to avoid being misled by unverified reports.
