NPFL Slams Kwara United with ₦9 Million Fine and Points Deduction Over Crowd Violence
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has handed heavy sanctions to Kwara United FC following crowd disturbances during their Matchday 22 fixture against Rivers United FC in Ilorin.
The Ilorin-based club was fined a total of ₦9 million, had three points and three goals deducted from their season tally, and was ordered to play the remainder of their home matches this season at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena. Kwara United has also been directed to identify supporters involved in the violence for arrest and prosecution, and has 48 hours to appeal the decision.
According to the NPFL, the club failed to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorised persons access to restricted areas. Supporters reportedly assaulted match officials and members of the Rivers United delegation, causing injuries and even holding officials hostage for several hours. The league also cited unsporting behaviour that brought the game into disrepute.
A breakdown of the financial penalties includes:
- ₦2 million for failing to provide adequate security
- ₦1 million for failing to control supporters
- ₦2 million for assaults on match officials and Rivers United officials
- ₦1 million for unsporting behaviour
- ₦1 million for holding officials hostage
- ₦2 million as compensation for medical treatment and damages
The sanctions follow an earlier public apology by Kwara United after the 1–1 draw descended into chaos. In their statement, the club expressed “profound regret and deep concern” and issued “sincere and unreserved apologies” to Rivers United, match officials, and security personnel, while pledging to cooperate fully with authorities.
The incident, which included an attack on Okey Kpalukwu, the NPFL Chairman of Chairmen, comes amid the league’s broader crackdown on fan violence. This season, clubs such as Remo Stars, Wikki Tourists, and Kano Pillars have also faced fines, stadium bans, and other disciplinary measures related to supporter misconduct.
The NPFL has intensified enforcement of its regulations in recent years, imposing heavier fines, point deductions, and venue changes to enhance matchday security and restore confidence in Nigeria’s top-flight football league.
