Nollywood Star Criticized for Political Endorsement Amid Economic Turmoil
Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham is facing backlash on social media after she took legal action against cyberbullies who criticized her support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections. Abraham had publicly endorsed Tinubu during the campaign period, believing in his ‘Renewed Hope’ action plans to tackle national challenges. Alongside other Yoruba movie stars, she campaigned vigorously for him.
However, since Tinubu’s inauguration, the country’s economy has sharply declined. On his first day, Tinubu announced an end to fuel subsidies, causing the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to soar from N185 to over N700 per liter. His administration also floated the naira, leading to its significant depreciation against the dollar, now trading between N1,200 and N1,500.
These policy decisions have exacerbated poverty levels, prompting criticism from Nigerians, including those who supported Tinubu. Abraham, known for defending her political stance, has faced particular scrutiny, with many expecting her to address Tinubu’s handling of these challenges.
Responding to critics on social media, Abraham clarified that she is not a politician and regretted openly discussing her political preferences during the elections. She emphasized focusing on her acting career and personal life moving forward.
“I’ve learned my lesson never to publicly discuss politics again,” Abraham stated on social media, reflecting on her experience amidst the ongoing controversy.
