NOA and NBRP Collaborate to Promote Reading Culture in Nigeria
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Network of Book Clubs and Reading Culture Promoters in Nigeria (NBRP) have partnered to encourage a nationwide reading culture, enhance literacy, and foster informed and responsible citizenship.
During a visit by the NBRP delegation to NOA’s Abuja office, NOA’s Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by the Director of Communication and Media, Mallam Bala Musa, highlighted the Agency’s commitment to education and positive behavioural change, especially among young Nigerians. Musa noted that young people are vital to the nation’s future, tasked with sustaining its values, driving development, and shaping long-term growth.
As part of its values reorientation strategy, NOA has developed a National Values Charter, approved by the Federal Executive Council, which outlines the core principles of a true Nigerian. Citizenship Studies have also been incorporated into primary and secondary school curricula, with plans to develop similar programs for university students in partnership with the National Universities Commission.
Chief Loye Olowookere, Abuja Coordinator of NBRP, emphasized the organisation’s mission to make reading a daily habit, calling it essential for intellectual growth, lifelong learning, and national progress. He noted that the FCT was recently named “Book City of the Year,” reflecting collective efforts to advance literacy and education. NBRP initiatives include school quizzes, academic competitions, book distribution, and stakeholder partnerships to strengthen reading culture.
Mrs Msurshina Comfort Chenge, National Vice President of NBRP, affirmed the organisation’s readiness to collaborate with NOA, while FCT Secretary Mrs Ayotola Ilori highlighted how NBRP could leverage NOA’s reach to expand literacy initiatives nationwide.
The meeting, attended by NOA and NBRP staff, including anti-bullying activist Lady Ejiro Umukoro, featured the exchange of Information, Education and Communication materials to support ongoing efforts to foster a culture of reading across Nigeria.
