No Lassa Fever Case in Kwara, Says Commissioner
The Kwara State Government has clarified that there is no confirmed case of Lassa fever in the state, despite a recent isolated incident involving a 14-year-old resident of Ogun State.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam, explained that the teenager was brought into Kwara State for medical care, where he was attended to by clinicians. She stated that the patient died a few days later, and subsequent laboratory results confirmed that he had tested positive for Lassa fever.
According to the commissioner, the state Ministry of Health immediately activated its rapid response measures following the confirmation of the result.
She noted that all healthcare workers who had contact with the deceased, as well as identified members of the community, were promptly placed under observation. Necessary preventive protocols, including isolation and administration of appropriate medication, were also implemented.
El-Imam assured residents that there is currently no transmission of Lassa fever in Kwara State. She urged the public to remain calm but vigilant in order to prevent the disease from entering and spreading within the state.
The commissioner advised residents to maintain proper hygiene practices, including keeping their surroundings clean to prevent rodent infestation. She also encouraged anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, sore throat, headache or general weakness to report immediately to the nearest health facility for prompt medical attention.
