Nnamdi Kanu Expresses Willingness to Negotiate with Federal Government
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has conveyed his willingness to negotiate with the Federal Government through his lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor on Wednesday.
Kanu has been in detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021, following his re-arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria. Facing terrorism charges in an Abuja Federal High Court, Kanu, during proceedings where two applications were filed.
Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act states that “In any Proceeding In the court, the court may promote reconciliation among parties thereto and encourage and facilitate the amicable settlement thereof”.
In response, the Federal Government’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, informed the court that he lacks the authority to negotiate on behalf of the government, as his mandate does not extend to negotiations.
He suggested that Kanu approach the Attorney General of the Federation for such discussions. Justice Binta Nyako clarified that the court’s role is to adjudicate cases, not to facilitate negotiations.
