NLC Denounces SGF’s Accusations, Urges Respectful Dialogue
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the recent remarks made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, regarding the nationwide strike orchestrated by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The NLC characterized Akume’s characterization of the strike as a “treasonable felony” and “economic sabotage” as deeply troubling and detrimental to constructive dialogue.
In a statement signed by Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs of the NLC, the labour union expressed profound disappointment at the SGF’s comments, stating that they undermine the democratic principles of dialogue and negotiation.
The statement emphasized that the real economic saboteurs are those involved in corruption and mismanagement of public funds, not the innocent workers exercising their constitutional right to strike.
It criticized the SGF’s disconnect from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians, highlighting the disparity between his salary and the cost of living expenses.
Furthermore, the NLC condemned the SGF’s assertion that he cannot afford to pay his four drivers N100,000 monthly, pointing out the exorbitant cost of essential goods like rice.
The labour union questioned the necessity of employing four drivers and called for accountability regarding the SGF’s expenditures and responsibilities.
The NLC emphasized the importance of strikes as a legitimate civic duty and a tool for holding the government accountable. It rejected any attempts to undermine workers’ rights and called for respectful and productive negotiations free from intimidation and threats.
Referring to the recent incident where labor leaders were surrounded by military personnel during negotiations at the SGF’s office, the NLC denounced such actions as a violation of their rights. It urged the SGF to retract his statements and approach negotiations with seriousness and respect.
The labour union reiterated its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and called for genuine dialogue to address their legitimate concerns.
It emphasized that Nigerian workers will not be swayed by intimidation tactics and remain steadfast in pursuing their demands through legitimate means.
In conclusion, the NLC urged the government to engage in good faith negotiations and reassured Nigerian workers of their unwavering commitment to their cause despite challenges and threats.
