Nigeria Police Force Raises Concerns Over Constable Recruitment Process Irregularities

June 15, 2024

The Nigeria Police Force has sounded the alarm following revelations of irregularities and alleged corruption in the recently released list of successful candidates for the 2022/23 Police Constable Recruitment Exercise.

In a statement issued by Police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, concerns were raised over multiple discrepancies that have tainted the integrity of the recruitment process.

Adejobi stated, “We have received numerous complaints and allegations of corruption regarding the irregularities that plagued the exercise. This includes the disappearance of names of candidates who successfully passed the screening stages.”

Upon thorough scrutiny of the published list on the Police Service Commission (PSC) portal, several alarming findings were disclosed:

Inclusion of Non-Applicants: The list includes names of individuals who did not apply for the recruitment, thereby casting doubt on the transparency of the selection criteria.
Failed Screening Candidates Listed: Names of candidates who reportedly failed either the Computer Based Test (CBT), physical screening, or both, were still included in the list of successful candidates.
Medical Disqualifications Overlooked: Despite being deemed medically unfit according to standardized tests, some candidates found their names on the list of successful applicants.
Allegations of Financial Impropriety: There are serious allegations pointing towards financial dealings and corrupt practices influencing the outcome of the recruitment, resulting in the inclusion of unqualified individuals.

In response to these revelations, the Inspector General of Police formally objected to the published list in a letter dated June 10, 2024, addressed to the Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

The objection underscores the necessity for a transparent and credible review of the recruitment process.

Adejobi clarified, “While acknowledging the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Commission’s authority to recruit for the police, it’s imperative to note that this authority does not extend to recruiting unqualified and inadequately trained individuals.”

The Police Force has distanced itself from the flawed list and called for an immediate review aimed at ensuring that only qualified, competent, and trainable personnel are recruited.

This initiative aligns with the administration’s commitment to police reform under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.

Despite the establishment of a Joint Recruitment Board by the Police Service Commission to oversee the process, concerns were raised regarding its effectiveness.

Adejobi highlighted that the Board was undermined, preventing it from fulfilling its mandate, including consenting to the final list.

In conclusion, the Nigeria Police Force emphasized its dedication to addressing the grievances of prospective recruits and ensuring a thorough review process that restores confidence in the integrity of police recruitment practices.

They reaffirmed their commitment to upholding high standards for the betterment of the force and the nation as a whole.
