Nigeria Data Protection Commission: Over 1000 Institutions Under Investigation for Data Breaches
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission has disclosed that over 1000 financial institutions, schools, insurance companies, and consultancy firms are currently under investigation for various breaches of citizens’ data.
Mr Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the commission, revealed that four major banks and three other institutions have faced sanctions, incurring fines totaling N400 million for infractions related to citizens’ data breaches during an interactive session with news men marking the first anniversary of the signing into law of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission Act by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
The legislation empowers Nigerians to seek redress for any form of data breach, emphasizing that citizens’ data must be processed in a fair, lawful, and accountable manner. Despite ongoing efforts to combat illegal digital loan platforms, He emphasized the need for heightened awareness among vulnerable Nigerians susceptible to loan sharks due to a lack of knowledge. Efforts will focus on raising awareness on the matter.
