NELFUND Clarifies Student Loans Are Voluntary, Not Compulsory

October 22, 2026

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, has clarified that accessing student loans is voluntary, stating that tertiary institution students should apply only when they genuinely need financial assistance. In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the fund explained that the scheme was established to ensure that eligible Nigerian students are not denied higher education because of financial difficulties. It added that students who can afford their educational expenses are under no obligation to apply, describing the loan scheme as a support mechanism rather than a compulsory requirement.
