NBA Defends Participation in State Police Committee, Warns Against Abuse

July 9, 2026

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has defended its participation in the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, saying it will help create legal safeguards against possible abuse of state police structures.

NBA President, Afam Osigwe, said the association’s involvement is aimed at contributing to reforms that can strengthen security and improve governance. He noted that while the NBA often criticises government actions, it also supports constructive engagement that promotes national development.

Osigwe said concerns over state police had previously centred on fears that governors could misuse the system for political oppression. However, he added that rising insecurity across the country has increased support for a decentralised policing model.

He stressed that proper constitutional safeguards and legal frameworks must be established to prevent politicisation and ensure that state police operates within the principles of accountability and the rule of law.
