National Association of Seadogs Calls for Stronger Protection of Citizens’ Rights
As the world marked Human Rights Day on December 10, the National Association of Seadogs (Pirates Confraternity) said the Nigerian government must do more to uphold the rights of its citizens. Speaking during an exclusive interview on Flow FM 92.7, Dr. Olaifa Sunday noted that both the 1999 Constitution and international frameworks, including those of the European Union, clearly support the protection of human rights and should not be altered. He added that current efforts remain insufficient, pointing out that safeguarding lives and property is a core entitlement of every Nigerian. Dr. Olaifa listed land reform, resource management, institutional accountability, economic development, and regional cooperation as key steps that can help address insecurity.
Dr. Aderemi Medupin, who also spoke during the programme, said the government must ensure that no citizen is denied their rights and that all departments and security agencies function as they should. According to him, the rights of Nigerians are non-negotiable, and authorities must take all necessary actions to prevent any form of violation. He noted that the country can only move forward when citizens’ rights are fully protected and nothing interferes with the freedoms they are supposed to enjoy.
