NAFDAC Orders Ban on Sachet Alcohol, Set to Take Effect December 2025
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small bottles under 200ml, set to take effect by December 2025. The move follows a resolution by the Nigerian Senate, which raised concerns over the easy accessibility of cheap alcohol to minors.
NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, said the ban targets high-alcohol-content drinks in small containers that are affordable, easily concealed, and linked to misuse, addiction, domestic violence, road accidents, school dropouts, and other social vices. The agency emphasized that the measure is protective, not punitive, aimed at safeguarding public health, particularly the well-being of children and youth.
The ban will be strictly enforced starting January 2026, with collaboration from security agencies and other regulatory bodies. Retailers and manufacturers have been urged to comply, as no further extensions beyond December 2025 will be granted. The directive applies only to spirit drinks packaged in sachets and small-volume bottles below 200ml.
