Middle East crisis: IGP places police commands on red alert
The acting Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has placed police commands nationwide on red alert amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following the United States’ and Israel’s war with Iran.
In a directive issued to commissioners of police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the IGP ordered heightened surveillance and intelligence gathering, particularly in the Northwest, Northeast, and Northcentral zones.
The directive, contained in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said state commands have been instructed to strengthen collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, increase visibility policing around worship centres and public spaces, and swiftly respond to any attempt to exploit global developments to incite unrest or sectarian tension.
The police leadership emphasised that while Nigeria remains stable and its internal security situation is under control, proactive and intelligence-led policing measures have been reinforced across the country.
The statement warned that Nigeria would not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts, stressing that any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country would be met with the full weight of the law.
The IGP also urged community leaders to promote peace and called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property and maintaining national security at all times.
