Labour Party Accuses NLC of Collusion with FG to Undermine Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Labour Party (LP) has leveled serious allegations against the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), accusing it of conspiring with the Federal Government to discredit its presumed 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and weaken opposition forces in the country.
In a strongly-worded statement issued yesterday by Mr. Marcel Ngogbehei, Director General of the LP’s Directorate on Mobilization and Integration, the party condemned remarks made by the NLC National Transition Committee (NTC).
The LP vehemently refuted claims by the NTC that Julius Abure was no longer the party’s national chairman, asserting that Abure remains the legitimate chairman recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the party’s highest decision-making body.
The LP called upon the NLC NTC to honor the reconciliation efforts initiated by Peter Obi or pursue legal recourse if they have legitimate grievances. Ngogbehei criticized the NTC for what he described as attempts to tarnish the image of the LP and its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We are calling on the NLC Transition Committee to cease its campaign to discredit our party and our 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi,” the statement read. “Barrister Julius Abure remains the authentic National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, as confirmed by INEC and our party’s highest decision-making organ.”
Ngogbehei further admonished the NTC for what he perceived as meddling in political affairs rather than focusing on safeguarding the interests of Nigerian workers amidst challenging economic policies.
“The NLC NTC appears to be aligning itself with government interests to stifle opposition structures in the country,” Ngogbehei continued. “Instead of learning from past leadership and advocating for Nigerian workers, they have chosen to interfere in political party affairs, undermining the only true opposition party.”
The LP urged the NLC NTC to redirect its efforts towards constructive engagement or pursue legal avenues if they wish to challenge party leadership or policies.
