Labour Leaders Await President Tinubu’s Decision as Minimum Wage Deadline Approaches
As the deadline for minimum wage negotiations looms, Labour leaders have revealed that they are eagerly awaiting President Tinubu’s decision on the proposals submitted by the tripartite committee.
With Monday, June 10, 2024, marking the deadline, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and other union officials are currently engaged in a labour conference convened by the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.
Despite their absence, the urgency of the situation is not lost on Labour leaders, who are closely monitoring developments from abroad. In anticipation of potential strike actions, the National Executive Council is poised to convene once Ajaero and other leaders return from Geneva.
However, there is a prevailing sense of caution within Labour ranks, emphasizing the importance of avoiding any actions that may be construed as incitement or confrontation with the government.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior NLC official stressed the significance of President Tinubu’s decision. “We have submitted the report to the president, and we are waiting for him to make his decision. That is the most important thing, and that is what we are all waiting for,” the official stated, underscoring the need for prudence and diplomacy in navigating the delicate negotiations.
