Kwara Police Warn Politicians Against Electoral Violence Ahead of 2027 Polls

October 16, 2026

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, has urged politicians to adopt issue-based campaigns and avoid hate speech, insults and personal attacks ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a sensitisation programme in Ilorin, Ojo advised political actors to use social media responsibly and notify the police of planned rallies to prevent clashes. He also urged politicians to tolerate opposing views and protect peaceful coexistence despite political differences.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ahmed Yushau Garki, represented by Abdulazeez Ibrahim, urged political parties to caution their supporters against violence. Deputy Commissioner of Police Idachaba Adamu warned that rumours and inflammatory statements could trigger electoral crises, calling on community leaders to address grievances early. The stakeholders also urged traditional and religious leaders to discourage political thuggery and promote peaceful elections before, during and after the polls.
