Kwara PDP Denounces Governor Abdulrazaq’s Handling of Local Government Autonomy
The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s handling of local government autonomy, labeling him an enemy of democracy and accusing him of deceptive tactics.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Ilorin and signed by the state publicity secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the PDP condemned Governor Abdulrazaq’s contradictory actions regarding local government autonomy.
The party highlighted the recent objection filed by the governor through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, against the Federal Government’s move to grant autonomy to local governments.
The PDP accused Governor Abdulrazaq of attempting to deceive the people of Kwara State by filing objections to the Federal Government’s initiative while simultaneously distancing himself from those actions in public statements.
The party described this as a display of leadership weakness and called on the governor to apologize to the people and withdraw his objections immediately.
Furthermore, the PDP reminded the public of Governor Abdulrazaq’s history of undermining local government autonomy, including his dissolution of democratically elected local government officials shortly after assuming office in 2019.
The party also criticized the governor’s failure to support LG autonomy during previous constitutional amendment processes.
The statement emphasized the importance of local government autonomy in democratic governance and accused Governor Abdulrazaq of perpetuating a culture of disregard for the rule of law by appointing his surrogates to caretaker committees and ignoring court orders.
In conclusion, the Kwara PDP urged the people of Kwara State to rally behind the party in efforts to rescue local governments from the governor’s control and emphasized the importance of active participation in future elections to hold the government accountable.
The statement reflects the ongoing political tension surrounding local government autonomy in Kwara State and underscores the PDP’s determination to challenge Governor Abdulrazaq’s leadership.
