Kwara NUT Demands Implementation of Pending Teachers’ Allowances, Threatens Strike

Public school teachers in Kwara State, under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), have called on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to approve the implementation of their long-standing demands, warning that failure to act could trigger industrial action.
In a letter dated September 10, 2025, and signed by the state chairman, Comrade Yusuf Agboola, alongside the deputy secretary-general, MONI Mike Modesty Itua, the union pressed for the payment of the 27.5 percent and 21 percent Teachers Specific Allowances (TSA) in full. The letter was also copied to key government officials, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, and the state commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development.
The teachers had earlier resolved to observe a day of fasting and prayer to seek divine intervention for the realization of their demands. The decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting held on September 9, 2025, where union leaders agreed to issue a formal ultimatum to the state government if necessary.
The NUT accused the state government of maintaining silence on the allowances despite repeated engagements and efforts to secure approval. It also distanced itself from social media calls for protests by public school teachers, insisting that the union had not authorized any demonstration.
The union emphasized that while its members remain calm, preparations are underway for possible escalation should the government fail to address the allowances, which it described as critical to the welfare and motivation of teachers across the state.
