Kwara Labour Movement Praises Governor AbdulRazaq for Prompt Inauguration of Minimum Wage Committee
The labour movement in Kwara State has commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for the swift establishment and inauguration of the state’s tripartite committee on the consequential adjustment of the new minimum wage of N70,000 for workers. The labour movement, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC), expressed their appreciation in a joint statement released on Thursday in Ilorin.
The state NLC Chairman, Comrade Muritala Saheed Olayinka, along with his TUC and JNC counterparts, Comrade Abdulrahman Olayinka Onikijipa and Comrade Saliu Oluwole Suleiman, highlighted the significance of the governor’s actions. They noted that Governor AbdulRazaq set a precedent as the first state governor in Nigeria to inaugurate a minimum wage tripartite committee at the sub-national level.
The labour unions assured the state government and Governor AbdulRazaq of their full commitment and dedication to the task ahead. They also expressed their gratitude for the governor’s consistent support of the labour movement, promising to reciprocate with diligent work on the committee.
“The organized labour movement in Kwara State, under the auspices of NLC, TUC, and JNC, particularly the newly inaugurated minimum wage tripartite committee members (Trade Union Side), wishes to show our profound gratitude and sincere appreciation to our amazing, dogged, and ebullient Governor of Kwara State, His Excellency AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his commitment toward the welfare of Kwara State workers regarding the composition and prompt inauguration of the new minimum wage tripartite committee,” the statement read.
The unions emphasized that this development not only highlights the governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare but also motivates them to further support his administration’s efforts.
A few days ago, Governor AbdulRazaq inaugurated the tripartite committee to address the consequential adjustments related to the new minimum wage. This action follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent assent to the new minimum wage bill, which mandates immediate implementation across the country. State governors and the organized private sector are also expected to apply the new wage structure to their employees’ monthly salaries.
The labour movement’s statement underscores the importance of this initiative, which is seen as a significant step forward in ensuring the welfare of workers in Kwara State. The unions have pledged to work closely with the state government to ensure the successful implementation of the new wage policy.
