Kwara Killings: Adeleke Urges IGP to Lift Ban on Osun Amotekun
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to lift the ban on the operations of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Operation Amotekun, in the state.
The appeal follows the recent mass killings by terrorists in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, which have raised concerns over the spillover of banditry and kidnappings into Osun.
Governor Adeleke said the state’s security response has been hampered because Amotekun’s operations were suspended, with its top officers detained for several months. He emphasized that the service had developed significant expertise in containing threats in rural border areas, and its shutdown has created a security gap exploited by criminals.
“I call on the Inspector General of Police to unseal Amotekun and allow its operatives to secure my people across the grassroots. Those officers in detention should be charged in court without further delay. Any postponement will jeopardize the safety of our citizens,” Adeleke said after a closed-door security meeting.
Following the Kwara attack, the governor announced intensified security surveillance across Osun State to prevent the crisis from spreading. He also expressed condolences to the people and government of Kwara State, particularly Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and prayed for peace and stability in the affected communities.
Adeleke further urged sustained collaboration among neighbouring states, traditional institutions, and security agencies to tackle violent crimes and protect lives and property.
