Kebbi State Boosts Tourism Ahead of 2026 Argungu Festival
Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Nasir Idris, has launched a major initiative to revamp the state’s tourism sector, leveraging its rich cultural heritage and natural resources as part of his administration’s renewed development agenda.
Kebbi is renowned for hosting high-profile cultural events, including the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival, Rigata Cultural Festival, Uhola International Cultural Festival, and traditional horse racing competitions, which draw visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.
To further stimulate tourism and attract investment, Governor Idris has established three new ministries and an agency dedicated to solid minerals development, animal health, the digital economy, and investment promotion. The administration also secured federal approval for a naval base in Yauri along the River Niger corridor, a move expected to enhance security and boost economic activities in the region.
Abdullahi Idris Sadaukin Zuru, Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy to the Governor, said the state is pursuing partnerships with both indigenous and foreign investors to fully develop its agricultural, livestock, and mineral resources. He added that previous administrations made efforts to attract investors, but the results were limited.
Analysts say the current administration’s approach reflects a strong belief that tourism and related sectors can significantly increase internally generated revenue and create jobs for residents.
Preparations for the 2026 Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival, scheduled for February 11–14, are already in advanced stages. The festival committee, led by Deputy Governor Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, with support from the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Muhammad Mera, and festival Director-General Alhaji Safiyanu Garba Bena, is renovating structures and upgrading facilities at key venues.
Festival highlights will include agricultural and livestock exhibitions, mineral displays, traditional performances, and the iconic grand fishing competition. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, traditional rulers, tourists, political leaders, and business stakeholders from Nigeria and abroad are expected to attend the event.
