‘Ireke: Rise of the Maroons’ Breaks Box Office Records in UK and Canada

Just three weeks after its premiere, the historic slavery-themed film Ireke: Rise of the Maroons continues to make waves internationally, selling out screenings in multiple cinemas across the United Kingdom and Canada.
Directed by Emmy Award-winning journalist Gbolahan Peter Macjob, the film has drawn packed audiences at Odeon Cinemas, Phoenix in Leicester, Vue International in Birmingham, Westfield, Lumiere Romford, and other venues. Screenings have also expanded to Canada, including the Mercury Shopping Centre.
Released on July 25, the film marks Macjob’s directorial debut and has quickly established itself as a powerful cinematic retelling of slavery, focusing on themes of resistance, defiance, and the resilience of the human spirit. While unflinchingly graphic in its portrayal of brutality, Ireke has been praised for bringing a fresh perspective to a difficult chapter of history.
The project, which blends history with cinematic ambition, has been described as both audacious and inspiring, cementing its place as one of the most impactful African historical films to date.
