Infantino Drops Plan to Sell FIFA World Cup Stakes

August 1, 2026

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has withdrawn plans to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup to private investors after the proposal failed to gain sufficient backing from major football bodies, including UEFA, CONCACAF, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and two members of FIFA’s leadership. Infantino confirmed that the proposal to sell shares worth $4.1 billion would not proceed, saying the plan had created divisions that were no longer in the best interest of football. He added that FIFA’s focus remains on growing the game globally, particularly in countries that need greater support.
