House of Reps Gives REA Boss 48 Hours to Respond to Query
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has been given a strict 48-hour deadline to respond to issues raised by the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy. The directive follows the absence of the agency’s Managing Director, Engr Abba Aliyu, at an ongoing investigative hearing in Abuja.
The committee, chaired by Afam Ogene, instructed Aliyu to appear before it on Tuesday, March 2, warning that official responsibilities must not be trivialised. Members also demanded a comprehensive written response from the agency within the 48-hour period.
The REA’s Executive Director of Corporate Services, Gboyega Ayoade, tendered an unreserved apology on behalf of the managing director, explaining that his absence was neither deliberate nor intended to disrespect the committee and requested additional time.
Meanwhile, the National President of the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN), High Chief Vitus Ofodum Vitus Ikenna, urged the committee to mandate the use of certified electrical professionals in renewable energy projects across the country.
Chairman Ogene emphasised that lawmakers are constitutionally tasked with holding public officers accountable under Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, reinforcing the committee’s determination to ensure compliance.
