House of Representatives Urges  Urgent Strengthening of Security in Nigeria’s Rural Communities

October 8, 2025

The House of Representatives has called for immediate and comprehensive measures to enhance security infrastructure across Nigeria’s rural communities, particularly in Kebbi State, where persistent attacks by bandits, cattle rustlers, and kidnappers have continued to devastate lives and livelihoods.

The call followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed, who raised concerns over the worsening state of insecurity in rural areas and its crippling effects on farming, education, and economic activities.

Lawmakers observed that many rural communities have become frequent targets of violent criminal groups, resulting in mass displacement, the abandonment of farmlands, and the closure of schools and healthcare centres. They warned that unless decisive action is taken, the trend could escalate food insecurity and deepen poverty in communities that form the backbone of the nation’s agricultural production.

The House noted that most of the affected areas lack adequate security presence and that existing formations are often understaffed, under-equipped, and ill-prepared to respond to emerging threats. The absence of key facilities such as patrol vehicles, communication systems, and surveillance technology was identified as a major factor hindering effective security operations in remote regions.

Legislators further observed that while urban centres have benefited from recent security initiatives, rural areas have been largely neglected despite being the hardest hit by violent attacks. They emphasised that strengthening rural security is crucial to safeguarding food production and maintaining national stability.

Following deliberations, the House resolved to urge the Federal Government to prioritise the deployment of modern security infrastructure to rural communities, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure regular patrols in high-risk areas. It also directed its relevant committees to liaise with security agencies to facilitate implementation and report back for further legislative action.
