Fluminense’s Fabio Breaks World Record for Most Appearances

Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio has set a new world record for the most competitive appearances in men’s football, playing his 1,391st match in Tuesday’s 2-0 Copa Sudamericana win over America de Cali at the Maracana. The 44-year-old Brazilian, who surpassed former England keeper Peter Shilton’s long-standing mark, received a commemorative plaque as fans celebrated his achievement. Fabio, who began his career in 1997 and won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense last year, has featured for Vasco da Gama, Uniao Bandeirante, and most notably Cruzeiro, where he played nearly a thousand games.
