Florida Governor Signs Bill to Rename Airport After Donald Trump
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially signed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport as the “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The airport, situated roughly two miles from former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, will require additional administrative steps, including approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and completion of necessary rights agreements, before the renaming becomes official.
The FAA noted that while airport name changes are primarily a local decision, it must update navigational charts, databases, and related administrative records to reflect the new name.
This move is part of Trump’s broader effort to leave a lasting mark on public institutions since his return to the White House in January 2025. He has previously sought to affix his name to other national landmarks, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., signaling his continued influence over public spaces and infrastructure.
Supporters of the renaming say it honors Trump’s legacy and contributions, while critics argue that naming public institutions after sitting or recently returned political figures could be politically divisive. The process for finalizing the airport’s name is expected to take several months as all administrative and legal requirements are completed.
