First Lady Stresses Link Between Family Stability and National Security

September 16, 2025

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has highlighted the critical role of family stability in strengthening national security and fostering economic growth, describing strong families as the foundation of a stronger nation.

She made the remarks at the opening of Exercise Haske Biyu held at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State. The First Lady was represented at the event by the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s exercise, “Family and National Security in Nigeria”, she said the family remains the bedrock of society, where individuals first learn values such as love, duty, respect, and sacrifice, which contribute to national unity and cohesion.

Tinubu warned that parental neglect, often caused by economic pressures, has left many children vulnerable to negative influences, including cultism, drugs, prostitution, extremist ideologies, and the get-rich-quick syndrome — trends she said pose a threat to national security.

She also underscored the role of religion in promoting unity, moral guidance, and resilience among young people, urging religious, traditional, and community leaders to intensify efforts in reinforcing positive values.

On government efforts, the First Lady noted that President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is supporting families through economic reforms and social interventions, particularly the conditional cash transfer programme, which provides ₦25,000 in three tranches to 15 million vulnerable households nationwide.

She added that her own Renewed Hope Initiative will continue to complement these efforts to ensure a better life for Nigerian families.

Tinubu commended the Armed Forces for their service, stressing that the outcomes of Exercise Haske Biyu should strengthen unity and national resolve for a safer and more secure Nigeria.
