Finidi George Disappointed by Absence of VAR in Super Eagles’ Draw with Bafana

June 8, 2024

Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, expressed his disappointment over the absence of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology during his team’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against South Africa in Uyo on Friday.

In a tightly contested encounter, the visitors, Bafana Bafana, managed to hold the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw. However, George voiced his frustration at key moments where VAR could have potentially altered the outcome of the match.

One particular incident that drew George’s attention was a denied penalty claim for his side when Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was brought down inside the box in the 53rd minute.

Additionally, a shot from substitute Samuel Chukwueze hit the crossbar and appeared to cross the goal line, prompting speculation that VAR could have provided clarity on the decision.

During his post-match media interaction, George referenced the successful implementation of VAR during the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire and questioned why such technology wasn’t available in crucial World Cup qualifiers.

“Chukwueze’s cross which hit the (underneath of the) bar, from where I was standing, I don’t know whether it crossed the line, but if there’s VAR, we would have had the opportunity of having a better view. For me, I’m just a coach and cannot change the rules of FIFA,” George lamented.

In addition to his disappointment over VAR, George shed light on his decision not to field Victor Boniface in the match against South Africa.

Despite the promising striker’s potential inclusion, circumstances on the field prompted a tactical adjustment, leading to Boniface’s exclusion.

However, George assured fans that Boniface may still feature in future matches, stating, “We have another game definitely, if he’s up and doing he’s going to play.”

Regarding criticism and demands concerning player selections, George emphasized the importance of on-field performance and urged patience from supporters, asserting, “For me, it’s what you can give to me on the field of play…let us do our job. We know who is good to go.”
