FIFA Plans To Speed Up Launch Of New World Cup Spin-off
LONDON — FIFA is moving to accelerate the launch of a new World Cup spin-off venture and aims to secure up to $4.2bn, equivalent to £3.1bn, from private investors by October. According to a confidential presentation seen by Sky News, FIFA wants binding bids and commitment letters completed by October, with investor funds transferred by the end of the month. This comes even as President Gianni Infantino has told member associations that a consultation process has only just been launched.
The new subsidiary, called FIFA Forward Enterprise, is being presented as a way to regulate and define competitions while also optimising commercial growth. The presentation states that outside investment can help fund higher salaries and attract top talent with incentive-driven compensation. The plan has sparked anger, particularly from UEFA, which said the proposal crosses a line that football’s governing institutions should not cross. Much of the criticism has focused on the speed of the process and the lack of consultation with football associations, including members of FIFA’s own council.
In a letter to members obtained by Sky News, Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said no detailed governance, financial or legal analysis had been provided, calling it totally unacceptable. He warned that the initiative will not succeed without the support of all confederations, which is currently not the case. European associations have begun discussing a World Cup boycott in protest. The English FA said it was deeply concerned about both the process and the principles involved. FIFA has given its 211 member associations a deadline of 19 September to sign up to the plan. Associations that do not sign will miss out on $86m, about £65m, in funding over the next 12 years. The sustainability of the $20bn FFE subsidiary, which plans to sell 20% to investors, may depend on FIFA expanding its competitions. Infantino is said to be working with JP Morgan and Joshua Kushner to launch FFE, and has proposed expanding the World Cup from 48 to 64 teams.
