FG Reconstitutes Committee to Harmonise Negotiations with Tertiary Unions

The Federal Government has reconstituted and inaugurated the Mahmud Yayale Ahmed Tertiary Institutions Committee to coordinate and accelerate negotiations with academic and non-academic unions across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The new committee, inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, is designed to streamline all ongoing and future negotiations under a single, harmonised framework aimed at ensuring inclusiveness and consistency in government engagements with the unions.
The initiative, jointly endorsed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmed, marks a shift from previous fragmented negotiation approaches. The committee is expected to engage all unions collectively to achieve comprehensive and lasting agreements.
According to the Ministry of Education, the committee members were selected to represent every segment of the education sector. It has also been equipped with a functional secretariat to facilitate its operations effectively.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly given full political backing to the process, directing that negotiations be concluded swiftly and fairly in the interest of industrial peace and academic stability.
The committee’s establishment comes amid renewed agitation from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which recently issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet the terms of earlier agreements or risk another strike.
The Minister of Labour and Employment commended the education ministry’s inclusive approach and emphasised that sustainable industrial peace can only be achieved through broad-based dialogue involving all stakeholders. He urged the committee to promote fairness and transparency while mediating between the government and the unions.
Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, pledged to lead the team with openness and integrity, ensuring that all recommendations are practical and capable of fostering long-term stability and productivity in the nation’s tertiary education sector.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to dialogue and consultation as essential tools for resolving disputes and preventing future disruptions in academic activities.
