FG Backs NPC Book Project; Shettima Hails Tinubu as Friend of Media
Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday described President Bola Tinubu as a friend of the media and a strong supporter of press freedom, while the Federal Government pledged backing for a major publication initiative by the Nigeria Press Council (NPC).
Shettima spoke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while receiving an NPC delegation led by its Executive Secretary and CEO, Dr. Dili Ezughah. The delegation briefed him on the council’s proposed national compendium documenting the economic and tourism profiles of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Vice President noted that the administration has maintained an environment where journalists can operate without harassment, allowing even critical voices to express themselves freely. He added that President Tinubu has supported media organisations personally and understands the publishing ecosystem.
On the NPC’s publication, titled Nigeria: Documenting the Economic and Tourism Profiles of the 36 States and the FCT, Shettima pledged federal support and promised to engage state governors to ensure wide ownership of the project. He emphasised that sub-national governments play a pivotal role in economic development and would be central to the compendium’s success.
Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, described the publication as a strategic tool for promoting Nigeria’s tourism and creative industries, enhancing visibility and investor confidence. Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Mohammed Auwal Jatau, representing Governor Bala Mohammed, noted that states would benefit significantly based on their economic and tourism strengths.
Dr. Ezughah thanked the Vice President for the audience and sought presidential endorsement and guidance, describing the initiative as a national branding effort to showcase Nigeria’s economic and tourism potential.
