Federal High Court Allows Suit Seeking Security Protection for Peter Obi Ahead of 2027 Election
The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted permission for a suit seeking to compel President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to provide maximum protection for the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Party (NDP), Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The suit, filed by two lawyers, Okere Kingdom Nnamdi and Joseph Enemona Amen, alongside the Incorporated Trustees of Rights For All, is seeking a declaration that Obi’s right to life and personal safety must be protected under the 1999 Constitution.
The applicants are asking the court to declare that Obi should not be subjected to threats, intimidation, harassment, assault or victimisation because of his political views, ethnicity or religion.
The legal action also referenced alleged comments by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who was accused of threatening Obi’s safety in the state. The applicants described the alleged remarks as unlawful and a threat to democratic rights.
Joined as defendants in the suit are President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the State Security Service, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Governor Okpebholo.
No date has been fixed for hearing of the matter.
