Federal Government Moves to Cut Road Accidents Nationwide

The Federal Government has announced new strategies aimed at reducing road accidents across the country. The Minister of Transportation, Alhaji Saidu Alkali, outlined the plans during a meeting in Abuja with a committee set up to address critical road safety issues. The committee, established on the directive of the National Assembly, is tasked with developing mandatory training and certification programmes for trailer and tanker drivers.
According to the ministry, the government is committed to funding the committee’s projects to ensure safer roads and enhance national security. The committee has already drafted and submitted a detailed action plan for approval, with the retraining and recertification of drivers identified as a key priority to curb frequent crashes involving articulated vehicles. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce accidents, safeguard lives and property, and strengthen performance standards in the transportation sector.
