Federal Government Appeals for Time As Labour Declares Indefinite Strike Starting Monday
In the wake of an impending nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024, the Federal Government has issued a plea to Organised Labour, urging them to reconsider their decision.
The strike, organized in protest against the government’s reluctance to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000, has prompted concerns over potential disruptions to essential services and economic activities.
In an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, emphasized the need for prioritizing the interests of the masses.
Mohammed underscored the significance of dialogue and negotiation in resolving issues related to worker welfare, emphasizing the partnership between the government and Organised Labour in advancing the collective well-being of Nigerian citizens.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly declared the commencement of an indefinite strike, citing dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to enact a new National Minimum Wage Act and reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs to N65/kWh
