Explosion at Zungeru Hydro Plant Raises Concerns Over Power Supply
The Zungeru Hydro Electricity Plant in Niger State, valued at N1.3 billion, has reportedly experienced a significant explosion early Monday morning, according to reports.
The dam, which is yet to be formally commissioned by the Federal government and is the fourth of its kind in the state following Jebba, Kainji, and Shiroro, suffered this unexpected event.
“We saw a foreigner,(Chinese) who is a worker who had severe injuries being ferried to Minna for further medical attention but we cannot say the exact number of staff injured but they are many,” the source added.
While Sources confirm that several workers on duty sustained injuries of varying degrees, with some receiving treatment at nearby hospitals and others transported to Minna, the state capital, for more extensive medical care.
Although, the exact cause of the explosion remains undetermined, initial reports indicate that it has also caused damage to some installations at the dam site as Concerns were also raised about the potential impact on electricity supply nationwide, given the plant’s connection to the National Grid and its capacity to generate 700 megawatts of power.
