Ex-South Korean PM Han Duck-soo Jailed 23 Years Over Failed Martial Law Plot
A South Korean court on Wednesday sentenced former prime minister Han Duck-soo to 23 years in prison for his role in an insurrection linked to ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed martial law declaration of December 3, 2024, ordering his immediate detention. Justice Lee Jin-kwan ruled that Han helped create the appearance of a legitimate cabinet meeting to endorse an unconstitutional decree, describing the episode as a self-coup by elected officials that posed grave dangers to democracy. The court found that Han, who knew of the plan hours before it was announced, failed in his constitutional duty to stop it, showed no remorse and attempted to conceal evidence, including ordering the destruction of a backdated document.
