European Recognition of Palestine Sparks Israeli Diplomatic Recall
Ireland, Norway, and Spain have officially recognized Palestine as an independent state, prompting strong reactions from Israel. On Wednesday, Simon Harris, Irish Prime Minister, announced that each country would take the necessary national steps to formalize this decision.
Recognising a Palestinian state will lead to more terrorism, instability in the region and jeopardise any prospects for peace,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said this week.
Meanwhile, Jonas Støre, Norwegian Prime Minister, echoed this sentiment, stating that Norway’s recognition aims to advance peace in the region despite Israel’s staunch opposition. He emphasized that the move reflects a broader European push towards recognizing Palestinian statehood.
In response, Israel has recalled its ambassadors from Ireland and Norway. Israel Katz, Israeli Foreign Minister, emphasized the recognition of Palestine as an independent state would lead to increased terrorism and instability.
Katz emphasized that Israel will not remain silent against actions undermining its sovereignty and security.
“I have instructed the immediate recall of Israel’s ambassadors to Ireland and Norway for consultations in light of these countries’ decisions to recognise a Palestinian state,” Katz said.
“I’m sending a clear and unequivocal message to Ireland and Norway: Israel will not remain silent in the face of those undermining its sovereignty and endangering its security,”
