Egypt Faces Criticism Over Alleged Deportations of Sudanese Refugees
Amnesty International reported on Wednesday that Egypt has engaged in extensive arrests and unlawful deportations of thousands of refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan.
While the exact total of arrests and deportations remains unclear due to the lack of publicly available statistics, the UN refugee agency noted that thousands were deported late last year, predominantly Sudanese.
Amnesty International has highlighted that Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights discredited the claims of increased arrests and deportations of Sudanese refugees, asserting that authorities adhere to international law.
The war that erupted in April last year between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has created the world’s biggest displacement crisis, with over nine million fleeing inside Sudan or crossing to neighbouring countries.
