EFCC Accuses Colleagues, Others of Shielding Yahaya Bello Amidst N80bn Fraud Allegations
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has levied serious accusations against individuals within the system, alleging that they are shielding former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello, who is accused of involvement in an N80.2 billion fraud case.
The EFCC’s acting Zonal Director for the Benin Zonal Command, Mr. Effa Okim, made these remarks during a familiarization visit to the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Asaba, the state capital.
Bello has reportedly failed to present himself for trial, despite the EFCC’s attempts to apprehend him and his repeated absence from court for arraignment. Consequently, the EFCC declared Bello wanted, and the Nigerian Immigration Service placed him on a watchlist.
Responding to questions about why Bello had not been arrested weeks after being declared wanted, Okim claimed that the ex-governor was being shielded by influential figures within the system.
He expressed frustration, stating that the failure to apprehend Bello was a collective shame on the nation, emphasizing that it was not solely his responsibility but that of the entire country.
Okim questioned the inaction of Bello’s colleagues and others within the political sphere, suggesting that they could influence him to present himself before the EFCC for questioning.
He emphasized the moral aspect of the case, highlighting the erosion of morality in the face of legality and calling for a unified stance from the media to address the issue.
Despite the challenges, Okim affirmed the EFCC’s commitment to upholding the law and pursuing justice, albeit within the confines of the legal process.
He underscored the importance of maintaining the integrity of the criminal justice system, despite the obstacles encountered.
In response, the Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, Churchill Oyowe, assured the EFCC of the support of journalists in the state, signaling a united front in addressing issues of corruption and justice.
