Edo Government Meets Health Workers’ Demands, Strike Called Off
The Edo State Government has reached an agreement with the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), leading to the suspension of the union’s seven-day warning strike, which began on October 17, 2025.
The industrial action followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government over demands for improved working conditions, payment of arrears, and the implementation of pending promotions for health workers across the state.
Following an intensive negotiation meeting held on October 19 between government officials, organised labour, and MHWUN leaders, the state government acceded to the union’s key demands. The meeting had in attendance the Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa; Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Godwin Esheishi; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole; NLC State Chairman, Bernard Egwuakhide Joman; and representatives of the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).
Resolutions reached included the processing of all pending promotions for staff of the Primary Health Care Development Agency, the commencement of training and evaluation for eligible staff, and the establishment of a committee to implement the reviewed National CONHESS salary structure.
The government also suspended housing fund deductions pending clarification on previously collected contributions and pledged to address other outstanding welfare concerns currently before the Accountant-General’s office.
Further meetings were scheduled to ensure close monitoring and implementation of the agreements.
The strike, which had disrupted healthcare services in several facilities across the state, was called off following the resolutions, and health workers were directed to resume duties immediately.
The development comes after the union’s repeated calls for better welfare, improved safety measures, and the inclusion of MHWUN representatives on the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency Board.
With the agreement reached, the government reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the welfare of healthcare workers and ensuring stability in the state’s health sector.
