D’Tigress Head Coach Rene Wakama Calls for Increased Investment in Women’s Basketball Following Olympic Quarter-Final Exit
Despite D’Tigress’ impressive performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Head Coach Rene Wakama has called on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) to invest more in women’s basketball to ensure the team can compete at the highest level in future tournaments.
Speaking to BSNSports.com.ng, Wakama emphasized the need for greater resources and support for the women’s team, following their valiant efforts in the tournament. Although D’Tigress were eliminated in the quarter-finals, they made headlines by defeating powerhouse Australia in their opening game and putting up a strong fight against Canada after an earlier loss to France. The team ultimately bowed out after a spirited performance against the United States, losing 74-88 in the quarter-final match.
Wakama underscored the importance of investing in the team to achieve better results in the future. “We need to invest in ourselves, give the girls the resources and support they need to reach the podium next time,” she said. “We are capable, and we have the talent.”
Highlighting the team’s pride in their Nigerian identity, Wakama added, “Everyone on the team is a full Nigerian. We don’t have to go out and get someone like other teams; we are born and bred Nigerians. But we have to invest in the future and import.”
Wakama’s comments come as a rallying cry for the NBBF and other stakeholders to prioritize the development of women’s basketball in Nigeria, ensuring that the team can build on their successes and reach new heights in international competitions.
