Dozens killed as powerful quake strikes central Philippines

Cebu, Philippines, October 1, 2025 – The death toll from the powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippines has risen to 69, with rescue operations underway as authorities race to locate survivors. The shallow quake, which hit late Tuesday off the coast of Cebu Island, is one of the country’s strongest in a decade, cutting power, collapsing buildings, and injuring at least 150 people.
Hospitals in affected areas, including Bogo City near the epicenter, have been overwhelmed, prompting the deployment of medical teams and emergency supplies by the Philippine coast guard. Local officials reported that children were among the casualties, with several deaths occurring after a sports complex collapsed during a basketball game. The quake, which was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, caused widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and historic buildings, though authorities confirmed no tsunami threat. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. pledged swift government assistance as heavy rains, water shortages, and electricity outages complicated relief efforts across Cebu and nearby municipalities. The disaster underscores the country’s vulnerability, situated along the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where strong earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common.
