Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen Suffers Minor Whiplash in Assault
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has sustained a light whiplash injury following an assault by a man in central Copenhagen, according to her office.
The 46-year-old Prime Minister was reportedly shocked by the incident, which occurred on Friday evening in Kultorvet square, the heart of the capital city.
Initially, her office issued a statement confirming the assault and her condition. However, an update provided on Saturday revealed that Frederiksen had been taken to Rigshospitalet for a medical examination following the attack.
According to the statement, the assault resulted in a minor whiplash injury, leaving the Prime Minister otherwise safe but understandably shaken. As a precautionary measure, her schedule for Saturday was cancelled.
Danish police announced that a 39-year-old man was apprehended and would be brought before a judge for preliminary questioning regarding the assault. However, further details surrounding the incident were not disclosed.
The assault occurred just two days before Denmark’s European Union parliamentary elections, raising questions about its potential connection to the political landscape.
Frederiksen had been actively campaigning alongside the Social Democrats’ EU lead candidate, Christel Schaldemose. However, media reports indicated that the attack was unrelated to any campaign event.
Eyewitnesses Marie Adrian and Anna Ravn recounted the incident to newspaper BT, stating that they observed Frederiksen’s arrival at the square shortly before 6 p.m. local time.
They described how a man approached Frederiksen from the opposite direction and forcefully shoved her shoulder, causing her to stumble but not fall to the ground. While the assault caused concern and prompted an immediate medical evaluation, Frederiksen’s injuries were reported to be minor.
