Court Orders IGP, AGF to Grant Adeniyi Adeyemi Access to Lawyers
ABUJA — The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police to immediately grant Adeniyi Adeyemi access to legal representatives of his choice while in detention.Justice Obiora Egwuatu issued the order while ruling on an ex parte application filed as part of a fundamental rights enforcement suit by Adeyemi.
He is currently linked to investigations into the alleged fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, PFIPC.In the ruling, the court directed the AGF, the IGP, and the Nigeria Police Force to allow Adeyemi “unimpeded access to lawyers of his choice at all reasonable hours” for as long as he remains in custody. Adeyemi, through his counsel M.B. Abdulazeez, had sought additional reliefs including bail, release from detention, access to medical practitioners of his choice, and an order restraining security agencies from interrogating him without a lawyer present.
However, Justice Egwuatu declined to grant those prayers at the ex parte stage. He held that the respondents should first be heard before the court makes further determinations. The judge subsequently ordered the AGF and the police to appear within 72 hours to “show cause” why the remaining reliefs sought by Adeyemi should not be granted.
The matter was adjourned to September 9, 2026 for the respondents to respond. Adeyemi was earlier declared wanted by authorities in connection with allegations surrounding the purported PFIPC, which is accused of impersonating a federal government intervention body. Speaking after the ruling, his lawyer said the order was a step toward ensuring due process and safeguarding his client’s constitutional right to legal representation. The Nigeria Police Force is yet to issue a formal response to the court’s directive.
